Charlottenburg's sumptuous town hall

Although Charlottenburg's extraordinary Rathaus (town hall) is located just a short walk from the well-known tourist destination of Charlottenburg palace, it seems to remain something of a well-kept secret.

Completed in 1905, the edifice combines elaborate Neo-Gothic styling with lighter, Jugendstil features.

The richly decorated facade (complete with enormous, 98 metre tower designed to dwarf any surrounding buildings) is certainly impressive, but perhaps the real highlight is provided by the lavish, little-known interiors.

A building that should certainly be on any architecture lover's must-see Berlin itinerary, the Rathaus also boasts a cosy restaurant that's well frequented by locals.
