Berlin
Medical history: Berlin's Charité hospital
Originally founded in 1710, Berlin's Charité hospital is one of the city's oldest institutions, and its compact campus of red-brick buildings also ranks as one of the city's loveliest tucked-away treasures.
Constructed between 1896 and 1917, much of the facility was damaged during World War II, but what remains is certainly impressive.
Take a leisurely stroll through the grounds, or for an in-depth insight into the hospital's history, tours can be arranged by contacting the Berlin Medical Historical Museum (details below)
And for a really good look at off-the-beaten path Berlin, make sure to take a peek at the neighbouring Veterinary Anatomical Theatre or Humboldt University's lovely Agricultural Faculty.
